As South Carolina's capital city, Columbia is a medley of Southern charm, history, recreation and culture.
There is so much to do in Columbia that it can't all be done in one trip. Golfing is a major sport in the city, and there are various country clubs and golf centers for your convenience. Columbia is only about an hour away from the Master's Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, so you don't have to miss that first shot. Other outdoor activities that are popular in and around Columbia are boating, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking, due to its proximity to rivers and lakes in the area. Also located in this area is the Columbia Inferno hockey team, and the South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks. Catch a game!
Arts and culture also abound in Columbia. There are various theatres, galleries, dance companies, orchestra, museums, and various examples of art around the city. There are also various festivals throughout the year to celebrate this area's rich heritage. Hear music from the Columbia Choral Society, or the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, or catch a show by the Columbia City Ballet, the South Carolina Shakespeare Company, or the Columbia Marionette Theatre (the only free standing theatre in the U.S. devoted to marionette arts). EdVenture and the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum are two of the museums located in Columbia. EdVenture is the South's largest children's museum, which allows kids to explore and learn while having fun. The Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum has a wide variety of artifacts from the Colonial period to the Space Age. It also boasts a number of artifacts from the South Carolina confederate period.
Not too far from Columbia is the Congaree National Park, a treat for nature lovers. An international biosphere reserve, Congaree is home to the largest contiguous tract of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the United States. It includes some of the tallest trees in the eastern United States, and is a sanctuary for plants and animals. The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is another of Columbia's greatest assets to the nature world. It houses more than 2,000 animals, and features a 70-acre botanical garden devoted to woodlands, plant collections, historic ruins and gardens.
No trip anywhere would be possible without some dining opportunities, and Columbia is no different. It offers a spectacular range of tastes from all over the world to please your taste buds and make your dining experience a culinary delight. Shopping is also another aspect of a vacation, and Columbia has so much to offer! Aside from five major shopping mall areas, Columbia has other shopping sections in the city. The Five Points Neighborhood is the eclectic village shopping area, while the Devine Street corridor offers upscale specialty shopping. Congaree Vista, located in the downtown area provides a unique shopping experience with shops that are filled with antiques, oriental rugs, jewelry, original artwork, hand-made furniture and collectibles.
Come spend your vacation at one of the Southeast's favorite family-friendly destinations -- Columbia!
